For the last few years we have been working hard to construct latrines for each house in Lagartillo.
We have completed 10 latrines and are almost halfway there!
Thank you for all who have donated to make this project possible. Please consider helping us to complete latrine construction in Lagartillo. Each composting latrine costs $200 and helps to keep the community clean and the drinking water safe.
Over the last 3 years Sonrisas has funded 6 different students allowing them to continue their education. The educational scholarships have ranged from elementary to college levels.
We are currently funding two individuals in Lagartillo. The community preschool teacher is finishing a college program and our veterinary student has just a year and a half left!
This year we still need to raise $600 to complete our educational scholarship funding for this year. We are also looking at $3,000 goal for 2012. Help us make this possible.
Thank you to South River Veterinary Service for your joint support in fundraising for Byron’s veterinary scholarship and donations of medical supplies.

Sonrisas is proud to announce another successful year with our community pharmacies.
We now have two pharmacies in Lagartillo and one on the coast in Las Iguanas. Our one pharmacy run by the government appointed health adviser for Lagartillo has been supplying much needed medicine to people in the village. This pharmacy consists largely of herbal remedies.
Our Animal pharmacy is run by Sonrisas member and veterinary scholarship recipient, Byron Cerros. He has been helping to supply low-cost vitamins, antibiotics, de-wormer and other medicines to animals in the community.
The pharmacy on the Atlantic Coast in Las Iguanas supplies medicines to surrounding farmers that live in the very rural mountains of the area, removed even from their small town on the opposite side of the river.
We would like to thank Peggy Lewis and Max Fornwalt for their generous donation that helped start the Animal Pharmacy. As well as herbalists, Lisa Crow and Kate Gilday for donating healing herbal remedies.
In January and February 2009, Sonrisas staff Megan McBride and Elizabeth Fussell are traveling to El Viejo to conduct an assessment of the programs at the Xochilt Clinic and to kick off a new round of the rural outreach education & free pap smear programs. We’re looking for medicines, medical supplies, laptop computers, and funding to pay for the outreach and pap smear programs. Read Megan’s letter about the upcoming trip!
This winter Sonrisas will be taking a group of volunteers to Lagartillo. While there, the group will be participating in a collaborative art project with the children of Lagartillo, as well as sharing in various cultural events in the community. Please assist us in making this trip possible!
